The core idea
India has six broad physical divisions. Rivers connect highlands to plains and seas; seasonal monsoon winds bring much of the annual rain. State boundaries organise government, while landforms and river basins often cross those boundaries.
1. Six physical regions and how they formed
The Himalayas are young fold mountains formed through the collision of tectonic plates. South of them, the Northern Plains contain alluvium: sand, silt and clay carried and deposited by rivers. The Peninsular Plateau is an older, elevated region of hard rocks. A plateau is high land with a comparatively broad surface; it does not have to be perfectly flat. These differences matter because rock, slope and soil influence drainage, farming and transport.
The other divisions are the Indian Desert, Coastal Plains and Islands. The Thar has a dry climate and sandy landscapes. Coastal plains lie between uplands and the sea. Lakshadweep is associated with coral islands in the Arabian Sea, while the Andaman and Nicobar chain lies in the Bay of Bengal. These are different landscapes, not interchangeable examples of “the coast”.

2. A river is part of a basin
A river basin is the area whose surface water drains into a river and its tributaries. A tributary joins another river; a watershed or water divide separates neighbouring drainage areas. Rain falling on opposite sides of a ridge can therefore reach different rivers. The Ganga, Brahmaputra and Indus systems are major Himalayan drainage systems. Many Himalayan rivers receive water from both rain and snow or glacier melt. Peninsular rivers depend strongly on seasonal rainfall, although reservoirs and groundwater also affect their flow.
3. Why the monsoon changes the year
Monsoon means a seasonal change in wind circulation. During the summer monsoon, moist winds from surrounding seas bring rain to much of India. Unequal heating of land and ocean and seasonal shifts in atmospheric circulation help organise this system. Mountains then redistribute the moisture. Air pushed up a slope cools; water vapour condenses and may fall as rain. After crossing the crest, descending air becomes warmer and drier, producing a rain-shadow effect. This helps explain the contrast between the wet western side of the Western Ghats and parts of the interior Deccan.

4. Weather, climate and daily decisions
Weather describes conditions over a short period: today’s rain, wind or temperature. Climate describes patterns over many years. One unusually wet day does not make a dry region permanently wet. Monsoon rainfall also has active spells and breaks; the same seasonal total can arrive as many moderate showers or a few intense downpours. That difference matters. A farmer needs moisture at the right crop stage, while a city needs drainage that can carry sudden runoff. Annual rainfall alone does not tell either person everything they need.

5. States answer a different question
A state is a unit of government. A physical region is a way of describing the land. Maharashtra contains a coastal belt, the Sahyadri range and plateau areas within one state. A single river basin can cross several states, connecting upstream and downstream communities. “Which state is this town in?” helps locate an authority or address. “Which basin is it in?” helps explain its water connections. Good geography uses both layers because a boundary on an administrative map does not stop a river or a monsoon wind.

6. Work it out: a coast and an inland farm
Imagine moist wind reaching a coastal hill from the sea. Village A is on the rising western slope; village B lies beyond the ridge. Predict which village receives more orographic rain: A, because its air is forced upward and cools. B may receive less after moisture has been lost. Now suppose B records heavy rain during one storm. That does not disprove the rain shadow; a climatic tendency is not a promise about every day. To plan water storage, B needs rainfall records, soil information and local water demand as well as the landform explanation.

- Draw sea, a coastal slope, a ridge and inland land. Add arrows showing moist air rising and descending.
- Add a river, two tributaries and a basin boundary. Explain where rainwater on each side of the boundary goes.
- Label the drawing “not to scale” and explain, in five sentences, why climate, rivers and state borders describe different things.
Check your understanding
Why are northern plains rich in alluvium?
Rivers carry eroded material from their catchments and deposit it as flow slows. Repeated deposition builds extensive plains.
Is a plateau always flat?
No. It is an elevated broad region and can contain hills, valleys and uneven surfaces. Height and overall landform matter, not a perfectly level top.
Why can neighbouring places have different rainfall?
Slope and wind direction can place one on a moist windward side and another in a rain shadow. Distance alone does not determine rainfall.
Can one basin belong to several states?
Yes. A basin follows drainage, while state boundaries organise administration. Shared water systems require cooperation across those boundaries.
