Indian temple architecture: reading plans and forms

A temple can be read as an arrangement of spaces, a structure assembled or carved by skilled workers, and a place carrying sacred meanings. Comparing these layers explains more than memorising the name of a style.

The core idea

A plan explains connections and movement; an elevation explains height and visible form; construction evidence explains how the building stands. Nagara and Dravida identify architectural traditions with internal variation, not two identical templates repeated across India.

1. Three drawings answer different questions

Imagine cutting a building horizontally above floor level and looking down: the resulting plan shows walls, openings, columns and connected rooms. An elevation looks straight at one side, revealing the outline and arrangement of levels. A section cuts vertically through the building, showing relationships hidden behind its outside surface. A photograph can compress these distinctions: a gateway in the foreground may appear taller than a distant sanctum tower. Identify viewpoint before comparing height. In a measured plan, thick wall marks are solid material, while blank space can represent an interior or an open court; the drawing legend decides which. A tower symbol does not automatically reveal the size of the room beneath it. This separation of representation and object is the first architectural skill.

2. Space creates a sequence

The garbhagriha is the principal sanctum; a mandapa is a hall; an antarala is an intervening vestibule where present. These terms describe relationships and uses, not simply increasing room sizes. At Khajuraho, the linked porch, hall, vestibule and sanctum create an axial sequence. Moving along an axis can concentrate attention toward a sacred centre. A circumambulatory passage introduces another kind of movement: a circuit rather than a straight approach. Some temples provide an enclosed passage; others arrange circulation outside; not every shrine has the same route. Columns organise hall space while also supporting overhead elements. Their spacing affects sightlines and usable passage. Architectural analysis can describe these effects while acknowledging that worshippers understand the centre through the particular deity, sacred narrative and ritual tradition of that temple.

3. Compare forms rather than labels alone

Nagara examples commonly emphasise a rising, curving tower over the sanctum; major Dravida examples articulate the sanctum superstructure through receding storeys. These are useful starting comparisons, not complete definitions of every regional building. At Thanjavur the monumental vimana belongs to the sanctum, while a gopura marks an entrance. A large entrance tower is therefore not a second sanctum merely because it is tall. Terminology also changes: shikhara can name the northern sanctum tower, while in descriptions of Dravida architecture it may identify a crowning part. Always connect a word to the part shown. Look at the tower outline, base, projections, roof transitions and position together. One decorative miniature tower is weak evidence for classifying the whole building. A regional name should summarise a comparison, not replace looking.

4. Construction leaves a different kind of evidence

A rock-cut shrine is made by removing material from a rock mass; a masonry temple is assembled from separate pieces. Similar looking columns can therefore have different construction histories. In one case the worker leaves a supporting portion while cutting surrounding rock away; in the other, builders position components and manage their joints. Neither process is effortless. Both require planning, skilled labour and knowledge of materials. At a structural building, repeated joints can reveal block courses, but a joint alone does not date a repair. A later hall may extend an older sanctuary, changing how visitors approach it. Distinguish the construction of a core from the later life of a complex. NIOS contrasts rock-cut and structural examples; the living Chola complexes also show why a monument’s history cannot be reduced to its first consecration.

5. Worked reading: solve a plan

Consider an invented teaching plan: an eastern doorway opens into a rectangular pillared hall; a narrow vestibule leads west into a square closed room; a continuous passage surrounds that room. The most defensible initial reading is hall, vestibule, sanctum and surrounding circulation. The route’s continuity matters more than its decorative outline: a passage interrupted by a wall cannot function as the complete circuit shown in an ideal diagram. Suppose the scale is one centimetre to two metres and the hall measures four by three centimetres on paper. Its represented dimensions are eight by six metres, giving forty-eight square metres before subtracting columns and other occupied areas. These measurements do not identify the deity or date. That requires additional evidence. The exercise demonstrates how geometry answers one question accurately while leaving religious identity and chronology open.

6. Worked comparison: variation within a tradition

Compare the sanctum towers at Thanjavur and Gangaikondacholapuram using their UNESCO descriptions. Both belong to the Chola architectural context, yet one presents a more straight-sided pyramidal outline while the other has a more curved rising profile. The conclusion is not that one must cease to be Dravida: a broad tradition permits deliberate formal variation. Next compare the Airavatesvara plan at Darasuram, which lacks an enclosed circumambulatory passage around its sanctum, with the passage at Thanjavur. A functional feature present in one example is absent in another related example. Pattadakal adds a further lesson: northern and southern forms coexisted in a Chalukya setting. Calling every Deccan temple an identical mixture hides the decisions visible in individual buildings. Make the comparison feature by feature, then state precisely what remains shared.

7. Sculpture belongs to a spatial setting

A carved figure has a position, orientation and relationship to surrounding forms. A guardian beside a doorway participates in a threshold; a narrative panel in a sequence may invite movement from one episode to another. Removing every image into an isolated photograph can hide those relationships. Khajuraho includes Hindu and Jain temples, reminding us that an architectural family does not specify a single religious community. Identify the particular building and image before making theological claims. A sacred explanation and a construction explanation can concern the same feature without answering the same question: devotees may understand a tower symbolically, while the architect studies its geometry and support. A useful final description joins visible evidence with context: describe the part, locate it, explain its connection, and state which interpretation the evidence supports.

Practice: annotate an invented plan

  1. Draw a square room connected through a short rectangle to a larger pillared hall. Answer: label these probable sanctum, vestibule and hall; the shapes alone do not establish their actual use.
  2. Add a surrounding passage with one blocked segment. Answer: mark the interruption; do not describe the route as a complete circuit unless another connection is shown.
  3. At one centimetre to two metres, calculate a five-by-two-centimetre hall. Answer: ten by four metres, forty square metres; area scales by the square of the length factor.
  4. Write one supported conclusion and one unanswered question. Answer: the plan connects hall and inner room; the building date cannot be inferred from that connection alone.

Check your understanding

Why can a photograph mislead about height?

Perspective changes apparent size; compare a measured elevation or account for distance before ranking towers.

Does a gopura identify the main sanctum?

It marks an entrance. Locate the sanctum independently by reading the connected spaces and the building’s documentation.

Why is one ornament insufficient for classifying a temple?

An ornament can be borrowed or repeated across traditions. Several related structural and spatial features give stronger evidence.

Must two Chola temples have the same circulation?

No. The Thanjavur and Darasuram examples demonstrate variation in the provision of an enclosed circumambulatory passage.

Does rock-cut mean unplanned?

No. Removing material irreversibly requires decisions about remaining supports, sequence and the final interior.

Can religious meaning be read directly from a geometric shape?

Shape alone is insufficient. Sacred interpretation depends on the particular tradition, image, texts and continuing practices.
