The core idea
Nyāya recognises perception, inference, comparison and reliable testimony as four means of knowledge. An inference needs an established reason in the subject and a dependable connection between that reason and the property being inferred. Repeating a conclusion does not supply either requirement.
1. Knowledge is an achievement, not merely confidence
A pramāṇa is a means by which knowledge is obtained; pramā is successful cognition rather than every thought someone happens to have. A confident mistake therefore cannot count as knowledge simply because it feels convincing. The Nyāyasūtra connects inquiry with overcoming mistaken understanding and, ultimately, suffering. This explains why its opening list includes doubt, reasoning, debate and defective arguments as well as objects of knowledge. The tradition is realist: knowing aims at things and their properties, rather than creating truth by agreement. Its many later authors developed and disputed details, so this lesson is an introduction to classical Nyāya, not a claim that one short formula represents every Naiyāyika. Begin an investigation by separating the object, the cognition about it, and the means that produced the cognition.

2. Four means answer different knowledge problems
Perception, pratyakṣa, concerns cognition arising through appropriate contact between a sense and its object; poor light or a damaged instrument warns us to investigate error. Inference, anumāna, reaches an unobserved fact through an established sign. Comparison, upamāna, has a more specific classical role than saying two things look alike: someone told that a gavaya resembles a cow later encounters the animal and learns the connection between the name and its referent. Testimony, śabda, involves the instruction of a reliable speaker. Competence and truthfulness matter; fame alone does not. These sources can cooperate. A learner reads a truthful identification guide, sees an animal, and reasons about its habitat. Calling everything inference would hide how different parts of the knowledge were acquired.

3. A sign must support this conclusion
The pakṣa is the subject under investigation, the sādhya the property to establish, and the hetu the reason or sign. In the familiar smoke–fire example, a hill is the subject, fire the target and smoke the sign. Vyāpti names the pervasion connecting the sign with the target: wherever the relevant smoke occurs, fire is present. This is directional; fire need not always produce visible smoke. The sign must actually occur in the subject, and the proposed connection must survive relevant counterinstances and hidden conditions. Mist mistaken for smoke defeats the first requirement. A generalisation based on two accidental coincidences fails to establish the second. Nyāya's concern is therefore epistemic as well as formal: how do we know the premises, not merely what follows if they are granted?

4. Five members make a demonstration inspectable
A demonstration for another person can state a thesis, a reason, an example expressing the general connection, an application to the present subject, and a conclusion. The Sanskrit names are pratijñā, hetu, udāharaṇa, upanaya and nigamana. Their purpose is not to make weak evidence strong by repetition. They expose what the hearer must understand and accept. An example is not merely decorative: it helps communicate the connection on which the inference depends. A challenge may concern the example, the alleged rule, or the subject's possession of the reason. The five-member form should not be called a modern experimental protocol or reduced to a contest about which civilisation invented logic. Its value here is to make an inferential commitment visible enough to examine.

5. Worked application: a library classification
In an invented library, every item carrying a verified R classification belongs to the reference collection. A current catalogue confirms that book K has that classification. Thesis: K belongs to the reference collection. Reason: K has verified R status. Example and rule: all verified R items are reference items, as the checked atlas A illustrates. Application: K meets that same condition. Conclusion: K is a reference item. The reasoning is sound under the stated classification rule and accurate records. Now suppose somebody copied an R sticker onto K. A visible sticker is no longer equivalent to verified status; the proposed reason has changed. Checking the catalogue restores the missing evidential link. Also, reference membership alone does not establish that K is valuable, accurate or unavailable for borrowing: those require additional premises.

6. Worked application: a wet courtyard
A student argues that it rained because the college courtyard is wet. Wetness is observed, so the reason belongs to the subject. Yet a sprinkler can produce the same sign. The proposed pervasion from wet courtyard to recent rain therefore fails. The conclusion may happen to be true, but this argument has not established it. A caretaker's reliable report of rain would add testimony; a checked rain gauge would add a different evidential route. Neither makes the original universal claim correct. Notice the distinction between a reason that is absent and a reason that is present but inconclusive. Testing alternatives is not automatic distrust of everyone. It is a focused attempt to discover exactly what the available evidence does, and does not, warrant.

7. Reasoning should resolve doubt, not manufacture victory
Nyāya distinguishes truth-directed discussion from forms of disputation aimed at victory or merely attacking an opponent. Tarka, suppositional reasoning that explores consequences, can support an inquiry without becoming a fifth independent pramāṇa. Ask what would follow if a proposed connection were denied, but do not treat any imagined consequence as established fact. A useful discussion records the disputed premise, the evidence that might settle it, and what both parties already accept. If a speaker changes the meaning of a term halfway through, restore a common meaning before continuing. There are elaborate classical classifications of defective reasons; their terminology changes across periods. The basic habit developed here is more durable than memorising a mixed list: locate the defect and explain why it matters.

Practice: repair an inference about opening hours
- A notice says that every scheduled open day has a supervisor assigned. Today a supervisor is assigned. Write the proposed conclusion that today is open.
- Identify today as the subject, being open as the target, and having a supervisor as the reason. Explain why the stated rule runs in the opposite direction.
- Construct a countercase: the supervisor may also be assigned for maintenance on a closed day. Thus the premise does not establish the conclusion.
- Repair the inquiry by checking the current opening schedule or obtaining reliable confirmation. Report what each source establishes instead of inventing a converse rule.
Check your understanding
Why is confidence insufficient for pramā?
An erroneous cognition may be held confidently. Knowledge requires getting its object right through an appropriate means, not merely feeling certain.
Does fire always permit an inference to visible smoke?
No. A connection from relevant smoke to fire does not automatically reverse. The converse needs its own support.
Why does the copied sticker weaken the catalogue argument?
The rule concerns verified classification. A sticker alone does not establish that classification, so the required reason is unproven.
Can a defective inference have a true conclusion?
Yes. It may actually have rained, although wetness alone does not prove rain. Truth of the conclusion and adequacy of the reasoning differ.
Is testimony simply obedience to authority?
No. The classical requirement concerns a reliable speaker. Relevant competence and truthfulness matter, and doubts about either invite investigation.
Why retain the five-member form when a short argument seems enough?
It can reveal the connection and application a hearer needs to assess. Its usefulness is explanatory, not a guarantee that every premise is true.
